These photos betray how bright and sunny a day it was. Seems hiking along the North face of a mountain in winter will leave you in shadow most of the day. Nonetheless, post-processing saved these from being terminally underexposed, and the day couldn’t have been better for a hike. The hike started at the base of Multnomah Falls, climbing Larch Mountain, and then coming down near Wahkeena Falls.

It was a miserably wet January day, but I wanted adventure, so I went hiking anyway. Silver Falls is a great choice for a hike in the rain, as the trail takes you behind three very large falls, the spray from which makes your waterproof coat particularly worth bringing regardless of the weather. These photos are a little washed out and dark, and the contrast leaves a little for me to desire due to the sun being thoroughly hidden behind the dense clouds. Still, I’m quite pleased with how many of these turned out.

newPhoto("100_2094", "At only 93 feet, Lower South Falls might seem small compared to it's bigger brother, but it's still just as intense as you walk behind it.", "Silver Falls");
newPhoto("100_2100", "Due to the rain, a large number of small impromptu falls appeared.", "Silver Falls");
newPhoto("100_2106", "30 foot Lower North Falls, which was audible from surprisingly far away.", "Silver Falls");
newPhoto("100_2111", "Double Falls tumbles 178 feet before crashing into a pool of water below. The mist from these falls was great enough that I daren't have approached any closer for fear that my camera would not survive the journey.", "Silver Falls");
newPhoto("100_2114", "106 foot Middle North Falls is the third and final falls I was able to walk behind.", "Silver Falls");
newPhoto("100_2117", "Another view of Middle North Falls.", "Silver Falls");
newPhoto("100_2122", "Having passed behind the falls, I was able to capture Middle North Falls from a small cave on the other side of the river.", "Silver Falls");
newPhoto("100_2117", "My hike ended near 134 foot Winter Falls. The water for these falls is routed under the main road in the State Park via a pipe of surprisingly narrow thickness given the appearance of the falls.", "Silver Falls");
newPhoto("100_2116", "This photo was completely accidental, a result of the shutter button being pressed somehow as I stumbled through the forest. Unlike most pictures taken in that manner, I thought the result of this one was actually pretty good.", "Silver Falls");
